We are taking more trips around the UK in recent years, and most of us will be going by road. As our cars have spend the majority of their time sat around or doing short trips, it’s a good idea to give them a bit of TLC before heading off on your trip.

TYRES

Probably one of the most important but often overlooked parts of a car. Giving your tyres a good check before taking a road trip will not only save you fuel and an unexpected stop for a flat on the side of the road. It could also save your life. A tyre blowout whilst driving at speed on a busy motorway can be deadly. Make sure you check the pressure and general wear and tear and don’t forget to check the spare tyre too!

BRAKES

Another super important area to check! Give your brakes a test, if they feel soft or make a grinding noise the brake pads might need replacing. It’s also important to check your brake fluid, do this when you’re checking your engine oil and other fluids.

LIGHTS

Get your road trip buddy to help you check all your lights. Making sure your brake lights and indicators work properly can help prevent accidents. Also, make sure your headlights are angled correctly so as not to blind other drivers!

BREAKDOWN COVER

Even the best-laid plans, and most prepared cars, can be scuppered by an unexpected breakdown. Make sure you have appropriate breakdown cover to get you and your car back on the road as quickly as possible. It’s also a good idea to put together a little kit to get you out of a tight spot. Include things like jump leads, wrenches, a first aid kit and a hi-vis vest.

CLEAN INSIDE & OUT

Last, but by no means least, make sure you give your car a really good clean inside and out for a comfortable and safe journey. This can really help to pass the time and enjoy the drive, having a clean car will boost your mood resulting in less aggressive driving and ultimately prevent any accidents.
